Who Was She? - A Legend in Her Day and Ours

Born in the late 1800s, she was raised by nuns in a Catholic orphanage.

She was briefly a popular singer before leaving show-biz for a career and International fame.

She was a legacy in her own time and continues to be nearly 50 years after her death.

Wooed and pursued by men of great wealth, she maintained her single life in luxury through her hard work, talent, and often financial aid from her wealthy pursuers or perhaps lovers.

An item she created and launched in 1910 is still sold and considered a best seller in its field.

A romantic liaison with a Nazi military officer caused her to be ostracized by her countrymen and women.

She went into a self-imposed exile for a few years. She eventually returned to her birth nation and at 70 successfully resumed her career.

Have you guessed who she is?

There has been speculation her famous nickname came from a song she sang or perhaps the description of a 'kept' woman.

Upon being proposed to by the fabulously wealthy Duke of Westminister, she replied,

"There have been several Duchesses of Westminister but only one,

'Chanel'.
